A Summertime Diet That’s Delicious… and Healthy!

One of the best things about summer is the food. Whether you are picnicking at the beach or grilling in the back yard, hot dogs, potato salad, and ice cold beer are all summer staples. Of course, indulging in all these goodies also means you might not be looking so great in your swimsuit.
While most of us are more active during the summer time it may not be enough to burn off all the extra calories we take in from eating our favorite summer snacks. Rather than racking up the calories on the more traditional fatty favorites, try a few of the tips below to stay slim this summer:
- Instead of ice cream, try snacking on chilled watermelon. It’s more than 80% water, which means not only will it satisfy that sweet tooth, but it will keep you cool and hydrated!
- Instead of steaks and burgers, keep your fridge stocked with fresh veggies for shish-kabobs.
- Don’t reach for the ranch or blue cheese dressing for your summer salads. Use fresh herbs and olive oil or simply go for more low fat versions of your favorites.
- Stay away from fatty or sugar filled drinks. Pina Coladas and cold beers are refreshing on a hot day, but they’re also loaded with fat. Instead try low fat sodas like root beer or fresh juices to quench your thirst.
- Put down the potato chips!! Set out bowls of healthy nuts like walnuts, almonds, and even peanuts as a healthier alternative to chips this summer.
Adopt a few of these healthy tips for summer and you’ll get to have more fun in the sun and less time on the treadmill!
